A good box bed design gives you a full room's worth of hidden storage under the mattress, and it still looks neat from the door. In most Indian flats the space under the bed is the biggest cupboard you have, so the box matters as much as the headboard.
This page is the starting point for every bed design with box on the site. Below you will find box bed design images grouped by style, then the plain facts: which storage type suits which room, the sizes to give your carpenter, and the common faults we see at delivery. If you already know you want solid wood, go to wooden box beds. If lifting a heavy lid worries you, see the hydraulic bed page.
Each picture carries a small spec strip. Screenshot it and you have an order sheet ready for the workshop.
Simple Box Bed Design with a Lift-Up Top
The simple box bed design is a plain rectangle with a top board that lifts off or swings up. It is the easiest to build and the cheapest box to repair.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildPly, walnut laminate
- StorageLift-up box
A flat headboard, square sides and one big box below. It suits a rental flat or a guest room where you store quilts and suitcases.
Tell your carpenterAsk for two lift points on the top board so it does not crack when you open one corner.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildPly, cream matte laminate
- StorageLift-up, 2 sections
Here the lid is lifted so you can see how deep the box really is. Ten to twelve inches of clear depth holds rolled mattresses and winter blankets.
Tell your carpenterPut a centre divider in the box so the top board has support in the middle.

- SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, honey melamine
- StorageLift-off top
Solid sheesham sides with a ply top board inside. A short headboard leaves the sill behind it clear and lets light in.
Tell your carpenterCheck that the inner ply is sealed with polish too, not left raw where termites can start.
Modern Box Bed Design, New Model Looks
The modern box bed design new model trend is clean edges, cushioned headboards and a box that hides behind a slim base. These box bed design photos show what shops are making right now.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildPly, grey fabric
- StorageHydraulic lift
A tall fabric headboard and a slim plinth make this look like a hotel bed, yet the whole top rises on pistons.
Tell your carpenterMatch piston force to the lid plus mattress, and confirm if the label means one piston or both.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildPly, white gloss laminate
- StorageHydraulic lift
A soft glow under the base makes the bed look like it floats. The box is still full depth, only the plinth is set back.
Tell your carpenterSet the plinth back 3 to 4 inches so feet do not hit it, and use a low-heat LED strip.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildPly, teal velvet
- Storage2 foot drawers
Wings on the headboard frame the pillows. Two wide drawers at the foot give quick access to daily bed linen.
Tell your carpenterUse full extension drawer channels so the drawer comes out fully past the bed edge.
Double Bed Design with Box: Drawers and Side Boxes
A double bed design with box does not have to mean one heavy lid. Drawers and side boxes let you take out a towel without stripping the bed. These double bed design photos with box show the options side by side.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildPly, light oak laminate
- Storage4 side drawers
Two drawers on each side hold clothes like a chest of drawers. This works only if you have about 30 inches of floor beside the bed.
Tell your carpenterMeasure side clearance first. Drawers 18 inches deep need about 30 inches of free floor to open.

- SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
- BuildPly, dark walnut veneer
- Storage2 side box flaps
Side flaps open the box from the long side, so you can reach one half without lifting the whole top. Popular in older Punjab and Delhi homes.
Tell your carpenterFit soft-close lid stays on side flaps so they do not slam onto fingers or the floor.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildPly, greige matte laminate
- StorageLift-up and 2 drawers
The lid holds seasonal things, the drawers hold daily things. A good mix for a family room where everything goes under the bed.
Tell your carpenterAsk the carpenter to keep the drawer zone separate so the box floor does not sag onto the drawers.
King Size Box Bed Design and Queen Size Options
A king size box bed design holds the most storage, but the lid is big and heavy. Above 60 inches width, plan for pistons or split lids. A 6 by 7 bed design with box is the common carpenter's name for a king around 72 x 84 inch frame.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildPly, rosewood veneer
- StorageSplit lift-up lids
Two separate lids mean each person opens their own side. Lighter lids also last longer on their hinges.
Tell your carpenterAsk for a fixed centre rail under the split so both lids rest on solid wood.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildPly, beige fabric
- StorageHydraulic lift
A curved top edge softens a square room. The box below is full depth with hydraulic lift.
Tell your carpenterAsk for high density foam behind the curve so the top edge keeps its shape.

- Size6 x 7 ft frame
- BuildPly, teak veneer
- StorageHydraulic, 2 lids
A big frame for a big room. The 6 by 7 size gives a king mattress room for a thick headboard without crowding.
Tell your carpenterCheck that the room has 24 inches free on both sides after the 6 x 7 frame goes in.
Box Bed Design with Head Box and Regional Styles
Some buyers want storage behind the pillows too. A head box adds shelves for books, phones and medicines. Bengali box bed design and Punjab box beds also have their own look.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildPly, ash laminate
- StorageBox and head box
Two small flaps hide a long shelf behind the pillows. Good for a bedroom with no space for side tables.
Tell your carpenterKeep the head box 6 to 8 inches deep so it does not push the mattress too far forward.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildTeak, dark melamine
- StorageBox and head box
A carved head box with small cabinets, a style many Kolkata families still order for a wedding room.
Tell your carpenterAsk for seasoned teak and check carving edges for cracks before final polish.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildPly, PU and SS patti
- StorageHydraulic lift
Golden steel strips and a tufted headboard make it bold. The box below is plain and practical.
Tell your carpenterAsk for stainless steel patti, not painted strip, so the golden trim does not darken.
Which Box Bed Storage Type Suits You
| Storage type | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Lift-off top | Things you need twice a year | You must strip the bed to open it |
| Hydraulic gas lift | Queen and king beds, older users | Piston must match lid weight |
| Front or side drawers | Daily clothes and linen | Needs 30 in of free floor |
| Side box flaps | Half the box at a time | Hinges loosen if overloaded |
| Head box | Books, phone, medicines | Adds 6 to 9 in to bed length |
For a head box in detail, see head box beds. For a side by side look at drawers, lids and open beds, see bed design with storage.
Sizes to Give the Carpenter
Settle the mattress before anything else, since the frame is cut around it. That frame usually runs 2 to 4 inches past the mattress each way, and a cushioned headboard adds more length.
| Name | Box frame to order (in) | Mattress it carries |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 39 x 78 | 36 wide, 72 or 75 long |
| Double | 52 x 82 | 48 wide, 75 or 78 long |
| Queen | 64 x 84 | 60 wide, 75 or 78 long |
| King | 76 x 84 | 72 wide, 78 long |
| 6x6 king | 76 x 78 | 72 square |
Aim for a sleeping surface between 20 and 25 inches high, close to knee height. Box depth of 10 to 12 inches inside is enough for most homes. For more on sizes by type, see king size beds, queen size beds and double beds.

Box Bed Problems We See and How to Fix Them
| Problem | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Top board sags in the middle | No centre support | Add a centre rail or divider |
| Musty smell inside box | Damp floor, no air | Keep box closed only when dry, add neem leaves or silica packs, air it monthly |
| Lid shoots up, or drops shut | Wrong piston force for the load | Change to a rating that matches lid and mattress |
| Laminate edge lifting | Weak edge band or water | Re-stick with edge band tape, wipe spills fast |
| Termite marks near floor | Untreated wood or raw ply | Treat with anti-termite solution, raise the box on small legs |
Box Spring vs Storage Box: Not the Same Thing
People search for box-spring bed design and get confused. A box spring is a sprung base that sits under a mattress, common in hotels abroad. An Indian box bed is a storage box under a solid top board. You can put any mattress on a box bed. You do not need a box spring at all.
Questions people ask
What is the best box bed design for a small bedroom?
A lift-up box with a slim headboard is best. Drawers need free floor beside the bed, which small rooms often lack. Choose hydraulic lift if the lid is wider than 48 inches.
Which is better, box bed or hydraulic bed?
A hydraulic bed is still a box bed. The difference is gas pistons that help you lift the top. For a single or small double, a plain lift-off top is fine. For queen and king sizes, pistons save your back.
How deep should the storage box be?
Ten to twelve inches of inside depth suits most homes. Deeper boxes raise the bed above knee height, which makes sitting awkward. Past about 25 inches total height, sitting on the edge feels like perching on a stool.
Ply box or solid wood box: which lasts longer?
Both work. Plywood in MR grade, 18 or 19 mm thick, is the usual choice for sides and top board. Solid wood like teak or sheesham costs more but lasts longer and can be repolished. See plywood box beds to compare finishes.
Can I keep clothes inside a bed box during monsoon?
Yes, if the box is sealed inside and you air it often. Pack clothes in cotton bags, not plastic, and add silica packs. Open the lid on dry sunny days to let moisture out.
What should I check when a box bed is delivered?
Open every lid and drawer fully. Check the top board does not bend, edges are banded, and there is no raw board inside. Sit on each corner to listen for creaks.
