Simple plywood bed design with a flat white laminate headboard and plain base

A plywood bed design gives you a strong frame, lots of storage and almost any finish you like. Most box and hydraulic beds in Indian homes are made of plywood for this reason.

These plywood bed design photos cover plain beds, stylish and modern looks, real wood veneer, and double beds with storage. For a bed, plywood design choices come down to three things: the grade of board, the face finish and the edges. We explain all three below the gallery.

Simple Plywood Bed Design and Plain Bed Design Ideas

A plain bed design in plywood is quick for a carpenter to build on site. Flat panels, straight edges and one finish keep the cost down and the room calm.

  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, white matte laminate
  • StorageLift-up box

One flat headboard panel and a plain base in matte white laminate. It fits a small room and goes with any bedding colour.

Tell your carpenterEvery exposed edge, even under the top board, needs white edge band tape.

Plain bed design in grey laminated ply for a single guest room
  • SizeSingle 36 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, light grey laminate
  • StorageLift-up box

A grey single bed with a low headboard keeps a guest room neat. Grey hides dust better than white.

Tell your carpenterSingle beds still need a 18 mm top board. Thinner board dips when someone sits on the edge.

Ply board bed design in light wood grain laminate with a low rounded headboard
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, oak grain laminate
  • Storage2 side drawers

Wood grain laminate gives a natural look without polish. The low rounded headboard sits neatly under a window.

Tell your carpenterKeep the headboard below the window sill and leave 2 inches between bed and wall for curtains.

Stylish and Modern Plywood Bed Design Looks

Plywood can be cut, grooved and layered in ways solid wood cannot. These stylish plywood bed design ideas use that to get a modern look. See also modern beds.

Stylish plywood bed design with a grooved two-tone panel headboard
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, walnut and grey
  • StorageHydraulic lift

A grey grooved panel sits inside a walnut frame. The grooves are cut into the laminate board with a router for a clean line.

Tell your carpenterAsk for V grooves cut before laminating, or use a pre-grooved laminate sheet for sharper lines.

Modern plywood bed design with wide wings and a cushioned centre panel
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, laminate, fabric
  • StorageLift-up box

The plywood headboard has wings that wrap around the side tables. A cushioned centre panel gives a soft place to lean.

Tell your carpenterUse high density foam under the fabric, and screw the panel on from the back so it lifts off.

New plywood bed design with a floating base and deep blue headboard
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, blue gloss laminate
  • StorageLift-up box

Deep blue gloss laminate on the headboard and a recessed base make the bed the focus of the room. It looks good with brass lamps.

Tell your carpenterRecess the base 5 inches on all sides. Gloss laminate shows scratches, so pick matte for the base.

Bed Design in Plywood with Real Wood Veneer

Veneer is a thin sheet of real wood pressed onto plywood and then polished. It gives the look of teak or walnut for less, and it suits buyers who want a wood bed without the weight.

Plywood bed design photos style teak veneer box bed with raised panel look
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, teak veneer PU
  • StorageLift-up box

Teak veneer with a satin PU finish looks like solid teak from a few feet away. The box base takes care of storage.

Tell your carpenterAsk for veneer on both sides of each panel so it does not bend, and match grain across the headboard.

Plywood bed design images with walnut veneer and a lit headboard niche
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, walnut veneer
  • StorageHydraulic lift

A long niche in the walnut veneer headboard holds books and a small lamp. The dark veneer suits a large room.

Tell your carpenterCut the niche before veneering, line it with veneer too, and add a socket at the back.

Royal plywood bed design with oak veneer slats and a tall headboard
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, oak veneer PU
  • StorageLift-up box

Tall oak veneer slats run up to 6 ft, giving a royal feel without carving. It works best on a plain wall.

Tell your carpenterFix each slat with screws from behind so no screw heads show on the veneer face.

Plywood Double Bed Design with Storage

Most plywood beds are built with storage, because plywood boxes are strong and light. For more box layouts, see our plywood box bed page.

Plywood double bed design with hydraulic lift open showing the storage box
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, white laminate
  • StorageHydraulic lift

The top board lifts on gas pistons to show the full box. Partitions inside keep quilts and suitcases apart.

Tell your carpenterAsk for a centre partition, and gas pistons whose rating suits the lid plus mattress.

Double bed design plywood with four side drawers in walnut grain laminate
  • SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, walnut laminate
  • Storage4 side drawers

Four side drawers are easier to use than a lift-up box when you need things every day. Walnut grain hides marks.

Tell your carpenterLeave 30 inches of space beside the bed so the drawers can open fully.

King size plywood bed design with head box and side storage units
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, matte beige laminate
  • StorageHead box shelves

A head box with shutters and side units with drawers give storage on three sides. It can replace a small chest of drawers.

Tell your carpenterKeep the head box 10 inches deep and check the bed still fits with 2 ft walking space each side.

Plywood Grades for a Bed

GradeStandardUseFor a bed?
MR (moisture resistant)IS 303Dry indoor furnitureYes, most bed frames use it
BWR (boiling water resistant)Check the sheet stampKitchens, damp roomsGood for a ground floor room with damp
BWP or marineIS 710Wet areasUsually more than a bed needs

Carpenters normally use 18 or 19 mm boards for the bed sides and the top board. Drawer bottoms and box partitions can take thinner sheets.

Laminate, Veneer or Paint on Plywood

  • Laminate (sunmica): about 1 mm thick, very easy to clean, many colours and wood prints. See sunmica beds.
  • Veneer: real wood, polished with melamine or PU. Looks the richest, but scratches need a repolish.
  • Duco or PU paint: smooth solid colour. Good for white or pastel, but chips show the board.

Whatever you pick, every cut edge needs edge band tape or a wood strip. Bare plywood edges soak up moisture and look rough.

Checklist Before the Carpenter Starts

  1. Check the grade stamp on the plywood sheets when they arrive.
  2. Confirm 18 or 19 mm boards for sides and top board.
  3. Ask for a centre rail under the top board on queen and king beds.
  4. Agree on the laminate or veneer shade with a sample piece.
  5. Ask for edge banding pressed with heat, not just glued by hand.
  6. For hydraulic beds, choose the gas lift rating only after the lid and mattress are known.

Our wooden bed design hub compares plywood with solid woods.

Questions people ask

Which plywood is best for a bed?

MR grade plywood (IS 303) in 18 or 19 mm is what most bed frames use. Choose BWR for a damp ground floor room. Marine grade is usually more than a bed needs.

Is a plywood bed design strong enough for daily use?

Yes, when it uses 18 mm board, a centre rail and good joints. Plywood holds screws well and does not crack across the grain like solid wood can.

Plywood or solid wood: which lasts longer?

Good solid teak or sheesham can last longer, but a well made plywood bed lasts many years indoors. Plywood is better for big storage boxes and costs less.

What is the latest new plywood bed design?

Lately people are choosing floating bases, grooved two-tone headboards, wing headboards around side tables and tall veneer slat walls. Matte laminates are more popular than high gloss right now.

What is the difference between ply bed design and plywood bed design?

They are the same thing. Ply is short for plywood. Ply board is also the same material.

Does plywood get termites?

It can, if it is untreated or stays damp. Buy treated plywood, seal all edges and leave a gap from any wall that gets damp.
