Fabric bed design in oatmeal linen-look cloth with a plain padded headboard

Every bed foam design has three layers you cannot see from the shop floor: a ply or wooden base, a block of foam, and a cover of fabric or leatherette. The cover is what you choose by eye, but the foam decides whether the headboard still looks plump in five years or sinks where you lean.

This page explains bed padding design in plain words, the way an upholstery bed design workshop would explain it to a customer. The 9 designs below are grouped by cover: fabric, leatherette and shaped foam headboards. Then you get a foam density guide, a cover comparison table and fixes for the problems upholstered beds face in Indian heat, dust and monsoon damp.

For stitched patterns, see our bed quilting page. For fully cushioned frames, see cushion beds.

Fabric Bed Design: Upholstered Beds in Cloth Covers

A fabric bed design is soft, warm and comes in any colour. Choose a tight weave and a shade that forgives small marks.

  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildLinen-look fabric, ply
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Compared with velvet, a linen-look weave lets air through and feels cooler in hot cities. Plain padding with no stitching is the simplest upholstered bed design.

Tell your carpenterAsk for 3 in foam on the headboard and a fabric with a tight, even weave that resists pilling.

Bed upholstery design in camel suede-like fabric with a wide winged headboard
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildSuede-like fabric, ply
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Suede-like fabric feels soft and has a gentle sheen. The camel colour pairs well with dark wood floors and brass lamps.

Tell your carpenterBrush suede-like fabric in one direction when cleaning so the nap stays even.

Padded bed design in bottle green velvet with a thick rounded headboard
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildBottle green velvet
  • StorageBox with lift-up top

Thick padding with rounded edges gives a plush, sink-in feel. Velvet shows the shape best but needs regular brushing.

Tell your carpenterWrap the foam edges with polyester wadding before the velvet goes on, so corners look round, not boxy.

Leather Bed Design: Leatherette Headboards and Frames

Most so-called leather beds sold in India use leatherette, a fabric-backed synthetic. It wipes clean, which makes it popular with homes that use hair oil.

  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildBlack leatherette, ply
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Black leatherette panels with white contrast stitching look sharp in a modern room. Wipe with a damp cloth; no soaps needed.

Tell your carpenterAsk to see the back of the leatherette roll; a cloth backing means it will last much longer.

Wooden leather bed design with a brown leatherette back in a teak frame
  • SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
  • BuildTeak, brown leatherette
  • Storage2 side drawers

A teak frame holds a brown leatherette back panel. The wood protects the edges, where leatherette usually starts to wear first.

Tell your carpenterKeep the leatherette panel removable so it can be replaced alone when it ages.

Modern leather bed design in white leatherette on a floating base
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildWhite leatherette, ply
  • StorageHydraulic lift

White leatherette on a recessed floating base looks crisp and modern. It suits rooms that get little direct sun.

Tell your carpenterWhite leatherette yellows in strong sun; keep curtains drawn in the afternoon and wipe weekly.

Modern Bed Back Foam Design: Shapes and Thickness

Foam can be cut into shapes before it is covered. These modern foam bed design ideas use the foam block itself as the design.

Bed back foam design with one thick foam block covered in rust fabric
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildRust fabric, ply
  • StorageBox with lift-up top

A single deep foam block, about 5 in thick, makes a headboard you can sink into. Best for people who read in bed for hours.

Tell your carpenterThick headboards add length; measure the room again with 6 in added at the head end.

Modern foam bed design with a layered two-tone padded headboard
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildGrey and white fabric
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Two foam layers in grey and off-white create a stepped headboard. A simple way to add depth without stitching or buttons.

Tell your carpenterMount the front layer on its own ply board; a colour change later then means one small panel.

Wooden foam bed design with a padded headrest strip on a sheesham headboard
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildSheesham, taupe fabric
  • StorageHydraulic lift

A narrow foam headrest strip on a solid sheesham headboard adds comfort without hiding the wood. Easy to remove and clean.

Tell your carpenterFix the headrest strip at shoulder height when sitting, roughly 12 to 18 in above the mattress.

Bed Foam Design Basics: Density, Thickness and Base

Foam density, not thickness, decides how long padding lasts. Shops write it as a number on the foam sheet. Ask for that number and choose a higher one for any part you lean on.

WhereFoam firmnessUsual thickness
Headboard you lean onHigher density, firm2 to 4 in
Decorative panel, not leaned onMedium density1 to 2 in
Side rails and footboardMedium density1 in
Deep sink-in headboardHigher density core with soft top layer4 to 6 in

The foam sits on ply, usually 12 mm for headboard panels. A wadding layer over the foam smooths edges and stops the fabric from rubbing directly on foam.

Questions people ask

Which foam is best for a bed headboard?

A higher density foam for any area you lean against, with a thin soft layer or wadding on top. Ask the upholsterer for the density number in writing.

Is a leather bed design real leather?

Most beds sold as leather in India use leatherette, a synthetic with a cloth backing. Real leather is rare and much costlier. Leatherette wipes clean, though years of heat can make the top skin flake.

Fabric or leatherette: which is better for Indian weather?

Breathable fabric is more comfortable in heat and humidity. Leatherette is easier to clean of hair oil and spills. In very humid places, keep any padded bed away from damp walls.

How thick should bed padding be?

Two to four inches for a headboard you lean on, one inch for side rails. Thicker padding adds length to the bed, so check the room size again.

Can I add foam to my wooden bed?

Most wooden headboards can take a padded panel or headrest strip, screwed on by a local upholstery shop. See ideas on our wooden headboard page.

What does fabric bed design mean?

It describes a padded bed covered in cloth such as velvet, linen-look or suede-like fabric, usually on the headboard and often on the base too. Bed fabric design choices change the feel more than any other part.
