Floating Bed Design: Hidden Base, Wall Hung and Hanging Beds

Floating bed design ideas with hidden bases, metal frames, wall hung and hanging beds, plus overhang sizes, light tips and safety checks for flats.

Modern floating bed design in light oak with a recessed plinth and warm glow below

A floating bed design tricks the eye into reading the frame as suspended. Most floating beds actually stand on a hidden base set far back from the edges, often with a strip light below, while true hanging beds are carried by the wall or the ceiling.

The look is clean and modern, it makes a small room feel bigger, and you can see and mop the floor under the edges. Below are six designs, three that stand on a hidden base and three that hang. For more modern looks see modern bed design, and for lower frames see low height bed design.

Modern Floating Bed Design with Hidden Base and Under-Bed Light

All three stand on the floor, but the support is pushed far inside the edge, so from eye level the bed seems to hang in the air. A warm light underneath completes the trick.

Modern floating bed design in light oak with a recessed plinth and warm glow below
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, oak laminate
  • StorageLift-up box

A light oak frame overhangs a dark plinth by about 9 inches all round. The warm strip light on the floor makes the bed look lifted, and it also guides your feet at 3 am without waking anyone.

Tell your carpenterPaint the plinth matte black or charcoal; a light plinth shows and kills the floating effect.

Floating bed metal frame design with one central steel base under a walnut platform
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildMS frame, walnut veneer
  • StorageNone, open below

Underneath is a welded square steel frame on a single central base, hidden from view. The walnut platform above carries the mattress, so the bed is very stiff and never creaks.

Tell your carpenterUse 50 mm square MS tube, powder coated; ask the welder for cross bracing every 18 inches.

Floating bed frame design in grey fabric with headboard fixed to the wall
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, grey fabric
  • StorageLift-up box

The padded headboard is screwed to the wall, and the base rests on a set-back box whose lid lifts for storage. Nothing touches the floor at the edges, so mopping under the overhang is easy.

Tell your carpenterFix the headboard on a French cleat into wall plugs, leaving a finger gap behind the base.

Hanging Bed Design and Wall Hanging Beds

These truly leave the floor. One hangs from the ceiling on ropes or chains, the others are carried by steel brackets fixed into a solid wall. They need planning with a mason or structural engineer, not just a carpenter.

Hanging bed design in teak suspended from the ceiling on four thick ropes
  • SizeSingle 36 x 75 in
  • BuildTeak, natural oil
  • StorageNone, hanging

A teak platform hangs from four thick ropes tied to ceiling hooks, like a swing bed. It sways gently and suits a sit-out room or a terrace bedroom.

Tell your carpenterCeiling hooks must be anchored in the RCC slab with chemical anchors; never into a false ceiling.

Wall hanging bed design in white laminate cantilevered from the wall with no legs
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildPly on MS bracket, white
  • StorageNone, wall hung

The bed is bolted to the wall on hidden steel brackets, with no legs at all. Cleaning under it takes seconds, and the open floor gives a tight room more breathing space.

Tell your carpenterOnly for solid brick or concrete walls; ask a structural engineer before fixing to block walls.

Hanging bed with black metal frame on chains, used as a reading daybed
  • SizeSingle 30 x 72 in
  • BuildMS frame, black powder
  • StorageNone, hanging

A black steel frame on four chains, padded with a thin mattress and bolsters. It works as a reading daybed in a large bedroom corner.

Tell your carpenterUse rated chain and shackles, and add a fifth safety cable; check the fixings once a year.

The floating bed with a hidden plinth is the safest and most practical choice for a main bedroom. Hanging beds are better as a second bed or daybed.

Sizes and Overhang for a Floating Bed Frame

Overhang is the distance between the outer edge of the bed and the hidden base. Too little and the trick fails; too much and the edge tips when you sit on it.

  • Aim for 6 to 10 inches of overhang on the sides and foot.
  • Keep the platform edge 18 or 19 mm ply doubled, or add a steel angle inside, so the rim stays rigid under a seated adult.
  • The mattress top usually lands at 16 to 20 inches, a little below normal sitting height, which suits the low modern look.
  • The frame comes out a few inches larger than the mattress on every side. For a queen mattress of 60 x 78 inches, expect a platform close to 5 ft 6 in by 7 ft.

Brief for the Carpenter and Electrician

  1. Mattress size and target mattress height from the floor.
  2. Overhang in inches on each side.
  3. Plinth colour and material; if storage is needed, a lift-up lid on the platform.
  4. Strip light: warm white, about 3000K, with a motion sensor so it switches on when you step down at night.
  5. Socket location for the light driver, planned before the bed is built.

Questions people ask

Is a floating bed safe to sit on at the edge?

Yes, if the overhang is kept under 10 inches and the edge is stiffened with doubled ply or a steel angle. Sit on a sample corner before final delivery.

Can a floating bed have storage?

A floating bed with a hidden plinth can have a lift-up box inside the plinth area. Metal frame and hanging beds have no storage, so plan a wardrobe or a storage bed elsewhere.

How is a floating bed different from a hanging bed?

A floating bed stands on the floor on a hidden base; it only looks like it hovers. A hanging bed really hangs, from ceiling anchors or wall brackets.

Is a wall hanging bed design safe in an Indian flat?

Only on a solid brick or concrete wall, with steel brackets and anchors chosen by an engineer. Many new flats have block or gypsum walls that cannot carry a bed.

Does the under-bed light use a lot of power?

No. A warm LED strip uses very little. Put it on a motion sensor or a timer so it is not on all night.
