A simple bed design is the one you will not get tired of: straight lines, one material, one colour, and no carving or tufting to clean. Ask any carpenter for a bed design, simple and sturdy, and it also costs less to make, because the carpenter spends fewer hours on it and uses less material.
Below are twelve simple beds in plywood, solid wood and metal, plus three full rooms. Each picture lists the size, build and storage, so you can ask a shop for exactly this. Looking for a bed design, latest, simple and still cheap? The walnut strip and rounded corner beds below are for you. Want a little more style? See modern bed design, or browse the double bed design gallery for more sizes.
Normal Bed Design in Plywood and Sunmica
This is the bed most homes order: a ply box, a flat headboard and laminate on top. Done neatly, a normal bed design looks clean for fifteen years.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildPly, teak grain laminate
- StorageLift-up box
A flat headboard about 18 inches above the mattress and a plain box base in teak grain laminate. Nothing to break, nothing to dust.
Tell your carpenterEvery visible edge, even under the headboard top, needs edge band tape pressed on hot.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildPly, white and walnut
- StorageHydraulic lift
A single walnut band across a white headboard adds interest without any extra work. It costs almost nothing over plain white.
Tell your carpenterThe strip should be pressed on the same day as the white sheet so both cure at one time.

- SizeDouble 48 x 72 in
- BuildPly, light grey matte
- Storage2 side drawers
Light grey with just the top corners rounded. It suits a 10 x 10 room where a big headboard would feel heavy.
Tell your carpenterUse soft-close drawer channels; the cheap ones rattle within a year.
Simple Wooden Beds with Open Legs
Solid wood beds on legs are easy to clean under and last for decades. Our simple wooden bed design page has more of these.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, honey polish
- StorageNone, open legs
Three horizontal sheesham rails and square legs. Sheesham is heavy and hard, so this frame will not wobble even after years.
Tell your carpenterLegs should join the rails by mortise and tenon; keep bolts only at the points that dismantle.

- SizeSingle 36 x 75 in
- BuildMango wood, clear matte
- StorageNone, open legs
A single bed with a low solid panel headboard in mango wood. Light enough to move alone, and it sits well beside a study table.
Tell your carpenterMango wood must be seasoned and treated against borers; ask the carpenter how long the timber dried.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildRubberwood, natural PU
- StorageNone, open legs
Thin round spindles let light through the headboard, so the bed looks smaller than it is. Rubberwood keeps the cost down.
Tell your carpenterSpindles should be fixed into drilled holes top and bottom, not nailed on the face.
Minimalist Bed Design: Modern and Simple
Minimal does not mean bare. It means each line has a job. These three are the simple modern bed design looks people save most.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildOak veneer, matte PU
- StorageNone, closed base
A thin headboard only 10 inches high on a light oak base. The mattress almost seems to float on its platform.
Tell your carpenterA thin headboard must be bolted to the frame, not screwed, or it will loosen when you lean back.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildPly, white fabric
- StorageHydraulic lift
One plain fabric panel with no tufting over a wooden base. It is the softest you can go while still calling it simple.
Tell your carpenterPick a washable cotton blend cover with a zip, since white fabric marks quickly.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildMS tube, matte black
- StorageNone, open legs
Square black metal tube and wooden slats. It dismantles flat, which suits renters who shift every couple of years.
Tell your carpenterSlat gaps over 3 inches let a foam mattress dip, so count the slats before paying.
Simple Bed Room Design Around a Plain Bed
A simple bed works best when the room around it stays calm too. If your brief is a bed room design: simple, light and easy to keep, these three rooms show the full picture.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildPly, light oak laminate
- StorageLift-up box
Light wood bed, cream walls, one shelf and one lamp. A middle class bedroom can look this neat with very little spend.
Tell your carpenterFix the shelf at least 15 inches above the headboard top so you do not knock your head.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildPly, white matte laminate
- Storage2 side drawers
A white bed against one soft blue wall, with plain cotton curtains. The coloured wall does the work so the bed can stay plain.
Tell your carpenterPaint the wall before the bed is placed, and leave an inch gap so paint does not rub off.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildPly, grey laminate
- StorageHydraulic lift
The bed and wardrobe share one grey laminate, so the room looks planned. Keep 3 ft clear between them for the shutters.
Tell your carpenterOrder bed and wardrobe laminate from one batch, or the shade will differ slightly.
What Makes a Simple Bed Cost Less or More
| Choice | Costs less | Costs more |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Ply with sunmica (decorative laminate) | Solid sheesham or teak |
| Storage | No storage, or a plain lift-up box | Hydraulic lift or drawers |
| Headboard | Flat, under 2 ft | Padded or very tall |
| Finish | Laminate | Veneer with PU, or duco |
| Size | Double | Queen or king |
The cheapest frames use particle board or MDF. They look fine at first, but they swell if water spills and they hold screws poorly. For a bed you want to keep, plywood is the floor.
Simple Bed Design for Bedroom Sizes
Most Indian bedrooms fall between 10 x 10 and 12 x 14 ft. Here is how a plain bed fits each.
| Room | Bed that fits | Space left | Mattress |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 x 10 ft | Single or small double | Room for a study table | 36 x 75 or 48 x 72 |
| 10 x 10 ft | Double | Walking gap on two sides | 48 x 75 |
| 10 x 12 ft | Queen | Wardrobe on the long wall | 60 x 78 |
| 12 x 14 ft | King | Side tables and a chair | 72 x 78 |
Where you climb in, keep a clear 2 ft or more. A plain frame adds only about 3 to 4 inches to the mattress size, which is one reason it suits small rooms.
Simple Does Not Mean Careless: Checks at Delivery
- Run a hand along every edge. No sharp corners, no lifting edge band.
- Push down hard in the middle of the top board. Any bending means trouble; ask for a centre support rail if it does.
- Lift the box lid. It should open without scraping the headboard.
- Look under the bed. Raw ply should be sealed or painted to keep out moisture and termites.
- Sit on the side rail. No creak means the joints are tight.
Questions people ask
What is a normal bed design size in India?
A double for a 48 x 75 inch mattress is the most common normal bed. Couples with space often choose a queen at 60 inches wide.
Which simple bed ka design suits a small middle class bedroom?
A double ply bed with a low flat headboard and a lift-up box. It gives storage for quilts and fits a 10 x 10 room with walking space on both sides.
Is a simple design bed strong enough without carving?
Strength comes from the board, joints and centre support, not decoration. An 18 mm plywood box with a centre rail is very strong.
What is the difference between minimal and simple?
Simple means plain and easy to build. Minimal is a deliberate modern look: very thin lines, low height, and almost nothing extra. Every minimalist bed is simple, but not every simple bed looks minimal.
Can a simple bed have storage?
Yes. A lift-up box adds little cost. Hydraulic pistons make lifting easier and suit heavier mattresses. Read more on our storage bed design page.
What colour keeps a simple bed looking new longest?
Mid tones like warm grey, light walnut and oak grain hide dust and small scratches better than pure white or deep black.
