Wooden hydraulic bed in sheesham with a carved sirana and a lifting top

A hydraulic bed is a box bed whose top board and mattress lift up together on a pair of gas pistons, so you can reach the whole storage box without pulling the mattress off. In shops it is also called a hydraulic storage bed, a bed with hydraulic storage or simply a hydraulic wala bed.

Below are 15 designs, from a plain single bed with hydraulic storage to a carved sheesham king. Every picture carries its mattress size, material, storage type and a short note meant for your carpenter. Further down you will find how the lift works, what pushes the cost up or down, a size table and the common faults with their fixes.

If you want a box without pistons, see our box bed designs. For more looks with gas lift storage, go to the hydraulic bed design gallery.

Wooden Hydraulic Bed in Sheesham and Teak

A solid wood bed with hydraulic storage lasts the longest, but the top is heavy, so the pistons must be rated for it. These three use sheesham or teak for the frame and a ply base for the lid.

Wooden hydraulic bed in sheesham with a carved sirana and a lifting top
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildSheesham, walnut PU
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

The carved headboard (sirana) gives this sheesham king a traditional look, while the lid lifts in one piece for blankets and suitcases. A roomy master bedroom carries it best.

Tell your carpenterAsk for a ply lid, not solid wood, so the pistons do not fight a very heavy top.

Teak wood bed with hydraulic storage shown open with the empty box inside
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildTeak, natural melamine
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

Here the teak frame is shown with the top raised, to show the full depth of the box. Teak, called sagwan, resists termites, which helps a box that stays closed for months.

Tell your carpenterCheck the box floor is ply with small air holes so stored quilts do not smell musty.

Hydraulic double bed in mango wood with a slatted headboard and plain sides
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildMango wood, honey matte
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

Mango wood costs less than teak and has a lively grain. The slatted headboard keeps the look light for a mid-size room.

Tell your carpenterHave mango wood seasoned and treated against borers before polish, and seal the inside of the box too.

Upholstered Bed with Hydraulic Storage

Fabric or leatherette covers hide the box line and give a soft headboard to lean on. Choose a dense foam so the cushions keep their shape. A padded hydraulic bed with storage also has fewer hard edges near the bedside.

Upholstered bed with hydraulic storage in teal velvet with a wingback headboard
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, teal velvet
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

The wingback headboard wraps around the pillows, and the whole frame is padded so there are no hard corners. Good for a guest room that also stores spare bedding.

Tell your carpenterInsist on dense foam behind the velvet, and a detachable fabric strip on the lid edge for washing.

Bed with hydraulic storage in brown leatherette with a button tufted headboard
  • SizeKing 72 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, brown leatherette
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

Leatherette wipes clean easily, so it suits homes with dust from a busy road. Over many hot summers it can peel, so keep it out of direct sun.

Tell your carpenterKeep the bed away from a sunny window; leatherette lasts longer out of direct heat.

Grey upholstered hydraulic double bed with vertical channel stitching on the headboard
  • SizeDouble 48 x 72 in
  • BuildPly, grey linen-look
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

Vertical channels make a low room feel taller. Linen-look fabric breathes better than leatherette in humid cities.

Tell your carpenterRequest a zip or velcro cover on the headboard making dry cleaning simple.

Single Bed with Hydraulic Storage for Small Rooms

A single bed hydraulic lid is lighter, so it opens easily and fits well in a teen's room, a study or a spare room. Most are built for a 36 x 72 inch mattress.

Single bed with hydraulic storage in white laminate placed in a study room
  • SizeSingle 36 x 72 in
  • BuildPly, white matte laminate
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

A white sunmica (decorative laminate) finish keeps a small room bright. The box takes school files, a spare quilt and a folded mattress.

Tell your carpenterUse 18 mm MR ply for the sides and ask for edge banding along all visible edges against chips.

Single hydraulic bed in oak grain finish with the lid lifting from the side
  • SizeSingle 36 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, oak grain laminate
  • StorageSide lift hydraulic

This one lifts along the long side, which works when the bed is pushed against a wall and the foot end is blocked.

Tell your carpenterTell the carpenter which side faces the wall; side lift pistons mount on the opposite long rail.

Navy padded single bed with hydraulic storage in a small guest room
  • SizeSingle 36 x 72 in
  • BuildPly, navy fabric
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

A padded navy headboard makes a single look finished in a guest room. Under the lid there is space for two rolled mattresses for festival visitors.

Tell your carpenterAsk for the lid to be split from the headboard by a 1 inch gap so fabric does not rub when lifting.

Hydraulic Double Bed in Ply and Laminate

Most carpenter-made hydraulic double beds use MR ply with laminate or veneer. These keep the cost lower than solid wood and still give a full box. Ask any shop for a double bed hydraulic quote in ply first, then compare it with wood.

Hydraulic double bed in walnut laminate with a wall-wide headboard panel
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, walnut laminate
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

This sirana stretches past both bed edges and carries two floating side shelves, so you do not need bedside tables.

Tell your carpenterFix the wide headboard to the wall separately so its weight does not load the hydraulic frame.

Double bed with hydraulic storage in two tone beige and grey laminate
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, beige and grey matte
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

Beige sides with a grey headboard give a modern two tone look that hides small scratches. Easy to wipe after monsoon dust.

Tell your carpenterPick matte laminate for the lid edge; gloss shows every finger mark where you lift.

Hydraulic box bed in teak veneer with a split half lift lid open
  • SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, teak veneer, PU
  • StorageHalf lift, foot side

The lid is split in two, and only the foot half lifts. A half hydraulic like this needs smaller pistons and opens more easily.

Tell your carpenterAsk for a fixed head half with a small drawer, and pistons sized for the lighter half lid only.

Hydraulic Storage Bed with Extra Drawers and Headboard Storage

When one box is not enough, add a head box or side drawers. These are useful in rented flats with no loft.

Hydraulic storage bed with a head box with open shelves and sliding doors
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, oak laminate
  • StorageLift box + head box

Books and medicines sit in the head box within arm's reach, while the lift box under the mattress takes the bulky things.

Tell your carpenterKeep the head box about 9 inches deep; deeper boxes push the mattress too far from the wall.

Bed with hydraulic lift and two side drawers in a dark wenge finish
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, wenge laminate
  • StorageLift box + 2 drawers

Two drawers at the side give daily-use storage, and the hydraulic box above takes seasonal things. Handy for a family bedroom with little cupboard space.

Tell your carpenterUse soft-close drawer channels and keep 24 inches free beside the bed so drawers open fully.

Metal hydraulic single bed with black powder coated frame and lifting top
  • SizeSingle 36 x 75 in
  • BuildMS tube, black powder
  • StorageFull hydraulic lift

A metal frame keeps the bed light and termite free. The lift board is ply on a steel grid, so the pistons stay small.

Tell your carpenterCheck the welds under the lid and ask for powder coating inside the frame, not only outside.

Hydraulic Bed Meaning: How the Gas Lift Works

The name is a little misleading. There is no oil pump inside. A hydraulic bed uses two gas lift pistons, one on each side of the box, fixed between the frame and the lid. The gas inside pushes the rod out, so it carries most of the weight of the top board and mattress when you lift. In Hindi, people simply call it a hydraulic wala bed: a palang whose top rises to open the box.

Pistons are sold by force rating. Shops label them 150 kg, 200 kg or 300 kg. A heavier top board and a thicker mattress need a higher rating. Always check if that label counts one piston or both together, then match it to your lid. A lid that is too light springs up on its own. A lid that is too heavy will not stay open.

  • Full hydraulic: the whole top lifts as one piece.
  • Half or semi hydraulic: the top is split and only one half lifts, usually the foot side.
  • Non hydraulic storage bed: a plain lift-up box with no pistons, or drawers only. Lower cost, but lifting a heavy mattress by hand is hard.

Hydraulic Bed Sizes and Frame Measurements

Fix your mattress before the carpenter cuts any board; the frame is made around it. Expect the outer frame to come out 3 to 4 inches bigger, and more at the head if the sirana is padded.

BedMattress (inches)Best for
Single36 by 72, 36 by 75Study, kids room, guest room
Double48 by 72, 48 by 75Small bedroom, one adult
Queen60 by 75, 60 by 78Most couples in a 10 x 11 ft room
King72 by 75, 72 by 78Master bedroom, 12 x 12 ft and up
6 x 6 king72 by 72Carpenter's square king

Plan 2 ft or more of clear floor beside the bed wherever someone climbs in. When the lid opens it swings up, so keep the area at the foot clear of a dressing table stool or a fan regulator box.

What Makes a Hydraulic Bed Cost More or Less

  • Material: solid sheesham or teak costs more than MR ply. Particle board and MDF cost the least but swell if water gets in.
  • Size: a king lid is larger and heavier, so it needs more board and stronger pistons.
  • Finish: laminate is the lowest cost, veneer with PU sits in the middle, and full upholstery with dense foam costs more.
  • Lift type: a half lift uses smaller pistons; a full lift king needs higher rated ones.
  • Extras: head box, side drawers, carving, lights in the headboard and soft-close channels all add cost.

Compare the same size and material when you ask two shops for quotes.

How to Close a Hydraulic Bed and Fix Common Faults

To close a hydraulic bed, hold the lid edge or handle and pull it down gently past the halfway point. The pistons slow the last part, so do not drop it. Keep fingers away from the side gap.

Questions people ask

What is a hydraulic bed?

It is a storage bed whose top board lifts on two gas pistons. The pistons take most of the load, so one adult can raise the mattress and reach the box underneath.

What is the hydraulic bed meaning in Hindi?

People say hydraulic wala bed or uthne wala box palang. It means a box bed with a top that rises on gas pistons, not a bed with an oil pump.

Is a full hydraulic bed better than a half hydraulic one?

A full lift opens the whole box in one go and is easier for bulky items. A half lift is lighter to open and costs a little less, but only one part of the storage is reachable per opening.

Can a solid wood bed have hydraulic storage?

Yes. Sheesham and teak frames take pistons well. Ask for a ply lid so the top is not too heavy, and pick pistons rated for that lid and your mattress.

Hydraulic or non hydraulic storage bed, which should I buy?

If you open the box often, choose hydraulic. If it stores things you need once a season, a plain box or drawers will do. See storage bed designs to compare.

How long do hydraulic bed pistons last?

They wear out slowly over years. When the lid stops staying open, replace both pistons with the same size and rating. Details are on our fitting page.
