PVC bed wall design in white marble-look sheet with thin gold beading

A bed panel design covers the wall behind the bed with ready-made or carpenter-made boards, so you get texture and a finished look without plaster work. Panels also hide uneven walls, old cracks and messy wiring.

The three big choices right now are PVC sheets, louvers (also called fluted strips) and wooden panelling. Below are nine bed back panel designs, three of each, with sizes and fixing notes. For paint, wallpaper and mouldings instead, see bed back wall ideas.

PVC Bed Wall Design and PVC Panel Bed Back Design

PVC panels are water proof, light and quick to fit, which makes a pvc bed design a smart pick for walls that get monsoon damp.

PVC bed wall design in white marble-look sheet with thin gold beading
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildPVC sheet, gold beading
  • StorageHydraulic lift

A glossy marble-look PVC sheet with gold beading between sheets. Water proof and easy to wipe, so it suits a damp outer wall.

Tell your carpenterFix PVC on a frame of aluminium channels, not straight on a damp wall, so air can move.

Bed room pvc design with teak wood grain PVC strips behind a double bed
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildPVC strips, teak print
  • StorageLift-up box

Wood grain PVC strips give a timber look at a lower cost, and termites ignore them. A practical choice for ground floor rooms.

Tell your carpenterAsk for 8 to 10 mm thick PVC strips; thin ones look plasticky and dent.

PVC panel bed back design in charcoal with a box bed in front
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildPVC, matte charcoal
  • StorageLift-up box

Matte charcoal PVC panels make a dark, cosy bed wall that hides marks. The light box bed in front stands out against it.

Tell your carpenterChoose matte PVC for bedrooms; gloss shows every joint and bump under lamp light.

Louvers Bed Back Design and Fluted Panel Bed Back Design

Louvers and fluted strips add vertical lines and soft shadows. A louvers bed back design suits modern and luxury rooms alike.

Louvers bed back design in walnut running floor to ceiling behind a king bed
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildWPC louvers, walnut
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Walnut louvers run full height and make the ceiling look higher. Hidden light at the top grazes down the strips at night.

Tell your carpenterOrder WPC louvers for damp walls, and plan the top light with an electrician before fixing.

Fluted panel bed back design in white with a rounded top edge
  • SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
  • BuildMR MDF, white duco
  • Storage2 drawers

White fluted panels with a rounded top keep a small room bright. The curve softens the straight lines of the bed.

Tell your carpenterOrder MR grade MDF and hold the panel 1 inch clear of the floor so mop water never reaches it.

Bed side louvers design framing the headboard with two narrow louver strips
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, oak louvers
  • StorageLift-up box

Only two narrow louver strips sit on either side of the headboard, keeping the centre plain. Works on a tight wall.

Tell your carpenterMake each louver strip 18 inches wide and line its edge up with the side table.

Wooden Bed Panelling Design and Fabric Bed Head Panel Design

Carpenter-made wooden and fabric panels give the most custom bed panelling design. They cost more but you choose every size.

Wooden bed panelling design with teak veneer squares in a grid
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, teak veneer, PU
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Teak veneer squares in a grid with fine grooves between them. A rich, warm wall that will last decades with care.

Tell your carpenterBook-match the veneer sheets so the grain flows across squares, and finish in matte PU.

Bed head panel design in stitched grey fabric blocks across the wall
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, grey fabric
  • StorageSide drawers

Stitched fabric blocks across the wall feel soft and absorb sound. Good for a bedroom on a busy road.

Tell your carpenterMount fabric blocks on Z clips so any one can be removed for cleaning.

Bedroom tv panel design opposite the bed in matching wooden panel
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildPly, oak laminate
  • StorageLift-up box

The bed front wall gets a matching wooden panel for the TV, so both walls feel planned together.

Tell your carpenterKeep the TV centre at eye level from the bed, around 42 to 46 inches high.

Modern Bed Panel Design: Which Panel Suits Which Room

Start with the wall, not the catalogue. The right bed wall panel design depends on damp, light and how long you plan to stay.

  • Rented flat: PVC or WPC on clip channels. It comes off without much damage when you move.
  • Outer wall with seepage: PVC only, on a batten frame, after the seepage is fixed from outside.
  • Master bedroom you own: veneer panelling or walnut louvers give the richest modern bed panel design and age well.
  • Kids or guest bed room panel design: wipeable laminate or PVC in a light colour, with rounded corners at bed height.
  • Small room: vertical lines on a bed back wall panel design make a low ceiling look taller.

Note that a panel bed design in furniture shops can also mean a bed whose headboard and sides are framed panels. Here we mean panels on the wall.

What to Tell the Panel Fitter

  1. Measure wall width and height at three points; old walls are rarely square.
  2. Say where the bed centre falls so panels are laid out from the middle, not one corner.
  3. Mark switch boards and lights first. Any cut-outs should be done before panels go up.
  4. On an outer wall, ask for a frame or batten base so there is an air gap behind.
  5. Ask for matching end caps and corner trims; raw panel edges look cheap.
  6. For lit louvers, use low-voltage LED strips with wiring hidden by an electrician. More ideas in bed with lights.

Questions people ask

Is PVC panel good behind the bed?

Yes, PVC is water proof and termite proof, so it suits damp walls. Pick thick panels with a matte finish and fix them on channels. Thin glossy sheets can look cheap up close.

What is the difference between louvers and fluted panels?

Louvers are separate strips with gaps or deep grooves, often in WPC. Fluted panels are boards with rounded grooves cut into them. Both give vertical lines; fluted looks softer.

Which bed back panel design latest look is popular?

Walnut louvers with a hidden top light, white fluted MDF and marble-look PVC with metal beading are asked for most right now.

Can I put a panel behind a bed with a cushioned headboard?

Yes, and it often looks best that way. Keep the panel plain or lined so the cushioned headboard stays the focus.

How long does a bed wall panel take to fit?

PVC and WPC panels usually go up in one or two days. Carpenter-made veneer or fabric panels take three to six days with polish.
