A bed cot design is the lightest kind of bed: four legs, four rails and a base you can see through or weave. In many Indian homes the word cot simply means a plain bed without a box, and the older woven cot is the one grandparents sat on in the courtyard. Lots of people type bed coat design or bed cart design when they search, and they mean the same thing.
Cots cost less, move easily and stay cool because air flows under you. They suit hot towns, guest rooms, verandas and anyone who sleeps on a thin mattress. Below are traditional, modern and headboard styles, then a guide to bases, sizes and how to keep weaving tight. If you want storage, a cot is the wrong choice; go to beds with storage instead. For a heritage look, see Indian bed designs.
Traditional Cot Bed Design with Woven Base
The classic cot bed design has a wooden frame and a woven base of niwar (cotton tape) or rope. It flexes a little and breathes in summer.

- SizeSingle 36 x 72 in
- BuildTeak frame, niwar weave
- StorageNone, woven base
A tight niwar weave in off-white on a teak frame. Put a thin cotton mattress on top and it is cool all summer.
Tell your carpenterAsk for tight weaving with a tensioning cord at the foot so you can retighten it later.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildSheesham, jute rope
- StorageNone, woven base
Jute rope weave on a sheesham frame, wide enough for two. Good for a veranda or a farmhouse room.
Tell your carpenterJute sags faster than cotton tape. Plan to reweave every few years.

- SizeSingle 36 x 75 in
- BuildMango wood, colour tape
- StorageNone, woven base
Bright tape in two colours makes the cot a feature piece. Lovely as an extra seat in a living room.
Tell your carpenterCotton tape fades in strong sun. Keep it under a roof, not in open sun.
Modern Bed Cot Design for Flats
A modern bed cot design keeps the open frame but adds slats, clean lines and a proper mattress. It looks light in a small flat bedroom.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildRubberwood, natural PU
- StorageNone, slatted base
Slats instead of weaving take a normal mattress. The frame is slim, so the room feels larger.
Tell your carpenterSlats should be at least 3 inches wide with gaps under 3 inches for a foam mattress.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildMS tube, black powder
- StorageNone, open frame
A metal frame with a cane headboard panel. Light, rust proof with powder coat, and easy to move.
Tell your carpenterAsk for a centre support bar with its own leg under any metal cot wider than 48 inches.

- SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
- BuildAsh wood, oak stain
- StorageNone, open legs
Tapered legs set in from the corners make the cot look like it floats. Clean, simple, easy to sweep under.
Tell your carpenterSet legs 3 inches in from the corners so toes do not hit them.
Cot With Headboard: Bed Cart Design Ideas

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildSheesham, honey PU

Cot Base Types Compared
| Base | Feel | Mattress | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton niwar tape | Springy, cool | Thin cotton gadda | Retighten yearly |
| Jute or coir rope | Firm, rough | Thin cotton gadda | Reweave every few years |
| Wooden slats | Firm, even | Foam or spring mattress | Check slats for cracks |
| Metal strips or mesh | Firm | Any | Watch for rust |
| Ply board | Hard | Any | No air flow, can trap damp |
Cot Sizes and Height
Cot widths follow mattress widths: single cots take a 36 inch mattress, doubles 48, queens 60. Mattress length is one of three: 72, 75 or 78. A woven cot is usually built close to the mattress size since there is no box to hide. The sleeping surface should land around your knee, somewhere from 20 to 25 inches. A woven cot with a thin gadda (cotton mattress) often sits a bit lower, so make its legs a touch taller. For a cushion or padded mattress top, see bed gaddi design.
Caring for a Woven Cot
- Keep it under a roof; rain and harsh sun rot rope and fade tape.
- Tighten the tensioning cord at the foot when the weave starts to sag.
- Brush out dust weekly with a soft brush.
- Treat wood legs against termites, especially where they touch the floor.
Questions people ask
Cot or bed: how are they different?
A cot is a lighter, open bed with no box and usually no heavy headboard. In everyday Indian use, a cot can also mean any simple bed frame.
Is bed coat design the same as cot design?
Yes. Bed coat and bed cart are common spellings people type when they mean bed cot. All of them point to the open frame beds shown here.
Can I use a foam mattress on a woven cot?
A thin foam mattress works, but a thick one will dip into the weave. For a regular mattress, choose a slatted cot base.
Are cots good for back pain?
A sagging woven cot is not ideal for back pain. A firm slatted cot with a good mattress is better. Ask a doctor about your own back.
Is a metal cot or a wooden cot better?
Metal cots are lighter and cheaper but must be powder coated against rust. Wooden cots feel warmer and look richer. See iron beds for more metal options.
