Simple steel single bed design with square tube legs and a plain flat headboard

A good steel bed design is slim, strong and safe from termites, which is why more Indian homes are choosing metal again. Below are 12 original steel and stainless steel beds, from a plain single for a PG room to a king size frame with a deep storage box.

Under every picture you get the size, build and storage line, so you can show it to a fabricator or compare it in a shop. Steel frames suit humid cities and rented flats because most of them unbolt for shifting. If you like black painted tube, see our iron and MS bed designs. For warm wood instead, start with the wooden bed gallery.

Simple Steel Bed Design and Steel Single Beds

These are the plain frames buyers ask for most often: thin square tube, a clean sirana (headboard) and nothing that swells in the monsoon. They suit guest rooms, hostels and teenagers moving out of a shared room.

Simple steel single bed design with square tube legs and a plain flat headboard
  • SizeSingle 36 x 72 in
  • BuildSS square tube, satin
  • StorageNone, open legs

One top rail and two flat bars keep this single light enough to lift alone. It fits a 9 x 10 ft room with a study desk beside it.

Tell your carpenterAsk for 1 inch square tube wall 1.2 mm or thicker, for the legs; thinner tube wobbles.

  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildSteel tube, chrome
  • StorageNone, 8 in floor gap

Open legs leave about 8 inches of clear floor under the frame, so the jhadu and mop reach every corner. Handy for homes that wash the floor daily.

Tell your carpenterFix rubber caps on all four legs so the frame does not scratch marble or tile.

Simple steel bed frame design, low height, with wooden slats and matte grey finish
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildSteel tube, grey powder
  • StorageNone, slatted base

The mattress top sits near 18 inches, a little under knee height, so a small room looks taller. Pick it for a studio flat or a young adult's room.

Tell your carpenterAsk for rubberwood or pine slats no more than 3 inches apart so the mattress does not dip.

Steel Bed Design with Box: Lift-Up and Drawer Storage

A steel box bed design keeps the slim metal outline but adds a plywood box inside the frame for quilts and suitcases. The steel carries the load; the box only holds your things.

  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildSS frame, ply box inside
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Gas lift pistons raise the top board and mattress together, opening a deep box for winter razai and spare pillows. Sensible for a flat with no loft.

Tell your carpenterMatch the piston rating to the lid weight, and ask whether the rating is per piston or per pair.

Steel bed design with storage drawers in white plywood under a black steel frame
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildBlack steel, white ply
  • Storage4 side drawers

Two wide drawers on each side open without lifting the mattress, which helps anyone with a weak back. Leave 3 ft of floor in front of each side so they pull out fully.

Tell your carpenterUse heavy duty full extension drawer channels and screw them into plywood, never into particle board.

King size steel box bed with a lift-up lid and thin golden trim on the headboard
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildSS, gold strip, ply box
  • StorageLift-up box

A gold coloured stainless strip runs round the cushioned headboard and the box sides. It looks dressy while the plain steel base stays out of sight.

Tell your carpenterCheck that the trim is stainless steel and not plated iron, so it does not rust in the rains.

Stainless Steel Bed Design: SS Frames and Steel Patti Work

With stainless steel, the finish does most of the talking: high polish, satin brush, rose gold or a black coat. A good SS bed design also uses patti work, thin steel strips set into wood or laminate.

  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildSS 304, high polish
  • StorageNone, round legs

The headboard bends in one smooth arc, so there are no welded corners to trap dust. It suits a white or pastel room where the shine can stand out.

Tell your carpenterAsk for grade 304 if you live near the sea; cheaper grades can show brown spots.

Steel patti bed design with thin steel strips set into a walnut laminate headboard
  • SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
  • BuildPly, walnut laminate, SS
  • StorageLift-up box

Three straight patti lines cross the headboard and carry on along the side rails, tying the whole bed together. Works well in a brown and cream room.

Tell your carpenterAsk the carpenter to cut a groove so the patti sits flush with the laminate, not glued on top.

Rose gold stainless steel bed with a grey velvet headboard panel held in the frame
  • SizeKing 72 x 75 in
  • BuildSS rose gold, velvet
  • StorageNone, raised legs

The rose gold tube frames a soft panel you can lean on while reading. A darker velvet hides hair oil marks better than a pale one.

Tell your carpenterCheck how dense the panel foam is, and pick firmer foam if you often sit up in bed.

New Steel Bed Design: Latest Steel Double and King Size Frames

The steel bed design latest images from fabricators show thinner lines, black and champagne finishes and bases that seem to float. These three newer looks still take standard Indian mattress sizes.

New steel bed design with a floating base, hidden legs and a slim steel headboard
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildSteel, black powder coat
  • StorageNone, recessed base

Legs tucked well inside the outline give it a hovering look. A soft light strip under the base doubles as a night light.

Tell your carpenterKeep recessed legs about 8 inches inside the edge, but under the slat line, so the frame stays steady.

King size steel bed design in champagne finish with a tufted taupe fabric headboard
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildSS champagne, fabric
  • StorageSide boxes

A champagne frame with a deep button tufted headboard looks rich without any carving. Give it a room of at least 12 x 12 ft.

Tell your carpenterPlan floor space with the frame size, which is a few inches more each way than the mattress.

Steel double bed design with teak top rails and a mixed steel and wood headboard
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildSteel frame, teak rails
  • StorageUnder-bed baskets

Teak rails on the steel frame put warm wood where your hands rest and steel where the load sits. A fair middle path for homes that like both.

Tell your carpenterAsk for the teak rails to be bolted, not welded, so you can sand and polish them later.

Stainless Steel, MS or Wood: Which Bed Frame Suits You

Stainless steel (SS)Does not rustSafeCool, shiny, modernCoastal and humid cities, rentals

Price climbs with the grade of steel, the tube thickness, any hydraulic fittings and the amount of upholstery. A plain chrome frame is the cheapest way into metal; rose gold or champagne coatings and tufted panels cost more.

Sizes and What to Tell the Fabricator

BedMattress (inches)Typical frame outside
Single36 x 72 or 75About 39 x 78
Double48 x 75 or 78About 51 x 81
Queen60 x 75 or 78About 63 x 82
King72 x 78About 75 x 84

Get the mattress in hand first. Then tell the fabricator:

  • How thick the tube walls are on legs and side rails. Thicker walls stop creaks.
  • Base type: wooden slats, a full 18 mm ply board or a box. A box needs treated ply.
  • Bolted joints if you will ever shift house, so the frame comes apart in four or five pieces.
  • Finish: grade of stainless steel, or powder coat colour for MS.
  • Mattress top height. For easy sitting, aim close to your knee, which for most adults is 20 to 25 inches.

Questions people ask

Is a steel bed better than a wooden bed?

Steel wins on termites, humidity and easy shifting. Wood feels warmer and is easier to carve or recolour. Many families pick a steel frame with a ply or teak headboard to get a bit of both.

Which steel is best for an SS bed design?

Grade 304 stainless steel resists rust best, especially near the sea. Lower grades look the same in the shop but may spot over time, so ask for the grade in writing.

Can I get a steel bed design with storage?

Yes. The usual route is a steel outer frame with a plywood box inside, opened by gas pistons or drawers. See more ideas on our storage bed page.

Do steel beds make noise?

A well made frame should be silent. Noise usually comes from loose bolts or thin tube. Tighten every joint a month after delivery, as bolts settle once the bed takes weight.

How do I use the steel bed design images here?

Save any picture and show it with its size and build line. For a long lasting bed design, steel with a ply base is hard to beat, and these notes help a fabricator quote correctly.

What should I check when the bed arrives?

Run a hand along every weld for sharp spots, check that legs sit flat, and look at the coating near the joints. When you shortlist a bed, steel design details like tube size matter more than shine.
