Modern brown bed design in walnut veneer with a low wide headboard

Bed colour design is about more than liking a shade: the bed is the largest block of colour in the room, so it sets how bright, warm or calm the space feels. In any bed room design, colour of the bed should be picked with the walls, floor and bedding, not alone.

You will find 9 original beds here in brown, black, blue and green, each with size and build, followed by a pairing table you can take to the paint shop. For lighter choices see our white bed designs and grey bed designs. For wood tones in depth, visit the wooden bed gallery.

Brown Bed Design: Walnut, Coffee and Dark Brown

Brown is still the most chosen bed colour in India, because it hides wear and matches wood doors and floors. The shade decides whether the bed looks modern or traditional.

Chocolate polish on sheesham brings out its dark streaks. A carved edge on the headboard keeps it traditional without being heavy.

Tell your carpenterAsk for a test patch of the polish on sheesham offcut; colours darken a lot on this wood.

Black Bed Design and Blue Bed Design: Navy to Sky

Black and navy look bold and modern; sky blue is fresh and light. Each needs a calm room so the bed does not overpower it.

How Finish Changes the Same Colour

Pick the bed design, colour and finish together. Matte laminate looks softer and hides marks; gloss shows the true colour brighter but also every scratch. PU polish on wood darkens the shade a little, and sheesham turns much darker than teak with the same stain. Velvet looks lighter or darker as you walk around it.

Cost rises with veneer, PU polish, velvet and special paint. Laminate in a solid colour is the most budget friendly way to get a bold shade.

Choosing a Colour by Room Size and Light

  • Small or dark rooms: light brown, sky blue, sage or white.
  • Large bright rooms: navy, black, bottle green or chocolate.
  • Rooms with yellow bulbs: warm browns and greens look best.
  • Rooms with white light: blues, greys and black look sharper.

Metal frames come in colours too; see our iron bed design page for powder coat shades.

Questions people ask

Which shade should a bed in a small room be?

Light colours such as natural teak, sky blue or white make a small room feel bigger. Keep dark colours for one feature, like the headboard.

Is a black bed hard to maintain?

Black picks up dust and finger marks quickly. Pick a fingerprint resistant laminate and give it a dry wipe every week.

Navy or black: which is easier in an Indian home?

Navy is softer on the eye and shows less dust than black. Black looks sharper in modern flats but needs more wiping. Both need light walls. A bed color design in navy also pairs well with brass and wood.

Does brown colour bed design go out of style?

No. Brown changes with the shade: walnut and light oak look modern, chocolate and dark walnut look traditional.

Can I change my bed colour later?

Laminate can be covered with new laminate by a carpenter. PU and duco can be repainted. Fabric headboards can be re-covered.

Which green is easiest to live with?

Olive and sage are calm and pair with wood. Bottle green is richer and suits bigger rooms.
