A good bed light design does two jobs: it gives the room a soft glow in the evening, and it lets you read without waking the person next to you. Light built into or around the bed does both better than one bright tube light on the ceiling.
This gallery shows nine light bed designs in three groups: light on the bed back, glow under the bed, and lamps beside it. Wiring advice here is general. Always get a licensed electrician to run concealed wiring, use low-voltage LED strips near fabric and wood, and place one switch within arm's length of your pillow. For panels that hide light well, see bed panel design.
Bed Back Light Design: Headboard Strips and Profile Lights
Light on the bed back makes texture show up. A bed room profile light design uses slim aluminium channels with an LED strip inside for a clean line.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildPly, oak veneer
- StorageHydraulic lift
A single profile light line runs across the wall just above the headboard. Warm, even and very modern.
Tell your carpenterRecess the aluminium profile into the panel so only the diffuser shows, flush with the surface.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildPly, taupe fabric
- StorageLift-up box
Hidden light washes down the cushioned panel from a cove at the top. The fabric texture comes alive at night.
Tell your carpenterAsk for a 3 inch deep cove so the LED strip itself is never seen from the bed.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildPly, light brown fabric
- Storage2 drawers
A light brown bed with a headboard that stands off the wall, edged by soft glow. The colour stays warm under the light.
Tell your carpenterKeep the headboard 2 inches off the wall so light spreads evenly around the edge.
Double Bed Design With LED Lights Under the Bed
Glow beneath the frame gives a hovering effect and guides sleepy feet to the bathroom at 2 a.m. LED light bed design latest models often add motion sensors.

- SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
- BuildPly, walnut laminate
- StorageLift-up box
The plinth sits well inside the frame edge, which creates a hovering look, and a soft strip glows below. Great as a night light.
Tell your carpenterFit the strip under the overhang and pair it with a PIR sensor that wakes the light when feet land on the floor.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildPly, matte grey laminate
- StorageHydraulic lift
A king platform with glow on three sides gives a hotel feel. The light also helps find slippers at night.
Tell your carpenterUse a dimmer on the under-bed strip so it can stay very low through the night.

- SizeSingle 36 x 75 in
- BuildPly, white laminate
- Storage3 drawers
A soft glow along the base of a single bed with drawers. Kind on young eyes and handy for midnight trips.
Tell your carpenterChoose warm white, not blue, for the strip so it does not disturb sleep.
Bed Side Light Design: Wall Lamps and Reading Lights
Reading lights should be aimed at the book, not the face. A bed side light design with wall lamps also frees the side tables.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildSheesham, walnut PU
- StorageLift-up box
Two swing arm lamps on the wall can be pulled to the book and pushed back after. Each side has its own switch.
Tell your carpenterLamp brackets go 18 in over mattress level, set 6 in inward from each bed edge.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildPly, sage fabric
- StorageHydraulic lift
Glass pendants hang low on both sides instead of table lamps. They leave the side tables clear.
Tell your carpenterHang pendants so the bottom is about 24 inches above the side table top.

- SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
- BuildPly, teak veneer
- StorageHead box shelves
Small adjustable spots are built into the top of the headboard. Each one points at one pillow.
Tell your carpenterAsk for low-voltage spots with their own switch on each side of the headboard.
Bed Light Design Types Compared
| Light | Best for | Where it goes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile light | Clean modern line | Set into panel above headboard | Needs a panel or groove |
| Hidden LED strip | Soft glow, mood | Behind headboard or cove | Use warm white, low-voltage |
| Under-bed strip | Night light, floating look | Under the overhang | Motion sensor helps |
| Wall lamp | Reading | 18 in above mattress | Separate switch each side |
| Pendant | Style, clear side tables | Hung from ceiling by bed | Plan ceiling point early |
Safe Wiring Basics for Lights on a Bed
- Get a licensed electrician; do not run mains wire loose behind fabric or wood.
- Choose low-voltage LED tape fed by a proper driver, kept somewhere it can breathe and be reached for repair.
- Put a switch within reach of the pillow, and a two-way switch if you also want it at the door.
- For storage beds with lights, ask for wire that bends with the lid and stays clear of the gas pistons.
- Plan all points before the carpenter starts; cutting finished panels later shows.
Warm or Cool Light in the Bedroom
Warm white (yellowish) light feels restful and flatters wood and fabric. Cool white is better for a study desk, not for the bed. A dimmer lets the same strip be bright for cleaning and soft for sleep. Coloured strips are fun in a teen room but tire the eyes as a main light.
For the full bed back plan around the light, see bed back design, and for the lamp table itself, bed side table ideas.
Questions people ask
Is LED strip safe on a bed?
Low-voltage LED strips run cool and are widely used on beds. Have an electrician fit the driver and wiring, keep the driver ventilated and away from fabric, and do not cover the strip with bedding.
What is a profile light in a bedroom?
It is an LED strip inside a slim aluminium channel with a diffuser cover. It gives a smooth line of light, set into a wall panel or false ceiling.
Which light colour is best for the bed back?
Warm white works best. It makes wood and fabric look rich and helps you relax at night. Avoid bright cool white close to the pillow.
Can lights be added to an existing bed?
Yes. Stick-on LED strip under the bed frame or behind the headboard, with a plug-in adapter, is the easy way. For a neat result, ask an electrician to add a socket and switch near the bed.
Where should reading lights be on a double bed design with light?
Fit one per side, roughly a foot and a half over the mattress and a little inside the bed edge. Each should have its own switch so one person can read while the other sleeps.
