A carving bed design brings real craft into the bedroom: flowers, vines, leaves and lattice cut into solid wood. It is the traditional look of the Indian palang, and it is still chosen for weddings and large master bedrooms.
This gallery runs from light work, like a carved band or carved legs, to full Saharanpur style headboards and carved box beds. For the bed, carving design depth and wood choice decide how good it looks after polish, so we explain both. In furniture, Saharanpur bed design remains the best known name for this work.

Simple Wood Carving Bed Design: A Little Detail Goes Far
Light carving on one part of the bed keeps the cost and the dusting down. It suits flats and medium rooms where a fully carved palang would feel heavy.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildTeak, honey melamine
- StorageNone, open legs
Only the two top corners of the headboard carry a carved rosette. Everything else is plain teak, which keeps dusting quick.
Tell your carpenterAsk for rosettes carved from the same board as the headboard, not glued on, so they never fall off.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildSheesham, walnut PU
- StorageLift-up box
A narrow leaf border runs along the top rail of the headboard. It adds a hand made touch without crowding the room.
Tell your carpenterKeep the carved band 3 to 4 inches high. Narrow bands look neat and cost far less.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildMango wood, teak shade
- StorageNone, open legs
The carving is on the legs only, with a lotus style turning at the top of each leg. The frame and headboard stay plain.
Tell your carpenterAsk for legs at least 3.5 inches thick so carving does not weaken them.
Saharanpur Bed Design: Vines, Flowers and Jaali
Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh is known across India for wood carving. Furniture from there often shows climbing vines, flowers and fine jaali (lattice) work, mostly in sheesham.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, dark brown PU
- StorageLift-up box
A climbing vine with leaves and buds spreads across the whole headboard. The dark polish makes the cuts look deep.
Tell your carpenterLook closely inside the leaves. Good work is sanded smooth with no rough fibres or glue marks.

- SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, natural PU
- StorageNone, open legs
Three jaali panels sit in a frame carved with small flowers. Light from the wall shows through the lattice.
Tell your carpenterAsk for the jaali in one piece per panel and a removable back so it can be dusted from behind.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, teak shade PU
- Storage2 side drawers
The newer Saharanpur style puts carving only in the arched crown and leaves the lower panel smooth for leaning back.
Tell your carpenterKeep the plain lower panel at least 18 inches high so your back rests on smooth wood, not carving.
Palang Design Wood Carving Box Bed
The carved palang with a box base is the classic choice for a wedding or a big master bedroom. It gives full storage under a showpiece headboard. See more royal frames on our royal bed page.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildTeak, rich walnut
- StorageLift-up box
Both the headboard and the base panels are carved, and the box under the mattress holds winter bedding and wedding gifts.
Tell your carpenterAsk for MR plywood inside the box with teak only on the carved outer panels to manage weight.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, gold shade PU
- StorageHydraulic lift
This newer style uses slim carving in a frame around a cushioned panel, with a hydraulic box. It mixes old craft and modern comfort.
Tell your carpenterChoose piston force for the carved lid. Solid carved lids are heavy, so ask for a ply lid.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildTeak, dark melamine
- StorageLift-up box
Four carved posts rise from the corners of a box palang. It is a grand look for rooms with high ceilings.
Tell your carpenterCheck ceiling height. Posts of 7 ft need at least 9.5 ft of ceiling to look right.
Wood Carving Bed Design Latest: Machine Cut and Mixed Styles
Machine carving (CNC routing) makes clean, even patterns at lower cost. Mixed with plain wood or cushions, it gives the carved look a fresh feel for today's rooms.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildPly, oak veneer, PU
- StorageLift-up box
A machine cut geometric pattern fills the centre panel. Every repeat is identical, which suits a modern room.
Tell your carpenterFor machine carving, ask for 18 mm solid wood or thick MDF. Veneer alone is too thin to carve.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, gold PU, velvet
- StorageHydraulic lift
Teal velvet inside a carved frame softens the wood and makes the headboard comfortable to lean on.
Tell your carpenterVelvet panels need dense foam inside and should unscrew for dry cleaning.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildMango, white duco
- StorageNone, open legs
Carving painted soft white with light distressing gives a vintage look. It suits a bright room with pastel bedding.
Tell your carpenterAsk for a sealer coat before the duco so the paint does not crack inside the carving.
Hand Carving or Machine Carving?
| Point | Hand carving | Machine (CNC) carving |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Each flower slightly different, deep and lively | Even, repeating, crisp edges |
| Time | Weeks for a full headboard | Hours to a few days |
| Cost | High, mostly labour | Lower |
| Best wood | Sheesham, teak | Solid wood or thick MDF |
| Finish | Polish highlights the depth | Paint or polish |
Many workshops now cut the rough shape on a machine and finish the details by hand, which saves time while keeping depth.
What to Ask Before Ordering a Carved Bed
- Which wood? Sheesham and teak hold fine detail. Softer woods blur after polish.
- How deep is the carving? Aim for at least 6 mm so it still shows after polishing.
- Is the carving cut from the solid board or glued on as strips?
- Is the inside of the box plywood, to keep weight down?
- Does the room fit it? Big carved headboards need wide walls and high ceilings.

Keeping Carving Clean and Polished
Dust settles in carving fast. Use a soft paint brush or a hair dryer on the cool setting once a week. Never use a wet cloth inside the cuts, since water marks show and dust turns to grime. Every few years, a polisher can clean and recoat the carved parts. In humid months, keep the bed off damp walls to stop mould inside the grooves. Our wooden bed design hub covers finishes in more detail.
Questions people ask
What is a Saharanpur bed design?
It is a carved wooden bed in the style of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, a town known for wood carving. Typical motifs are vines, flowers and jaali, often in sheesham.
What wood suits a carving bed design?
Sheesham and teak are the top choices because they are hard and hold fine detail. Mango wood can be carved but the detail is softer.
Is a carved bed hard to keep clean?
It needs more dusting than a plain bed. A soft brush once a week is enough. Choose carving on one part only if you want less upkeep.
Can a carved palang have a hydraulic lift?
Yes, if the lid is plywood with only a carved outer frame, so it stays light. Then pick pistons for that combined load.
What makes a carved bed cost more?
Hand carving takes many days of skilled work, so the amount and depth of carving decide most of the cost. Wood type, size and a box base add to it.
Do carved beds suit small rooms?
Full carving can crowd a small room. Pick a simple wood carving bed design with a single carved band or carved legs instead.
