Handmade wooden bed design in teak with exposed through tenons on the headboard posts

A handmade wooden bed design is built in a carpenter's workshop, to your size, from solid wood and proper joints. It is the opposite of a flat-pack bed held together by cam screws.

The six beds below show joinery you can see, like through tenons, dovetails and wooden pegs, plus a few unique catalogue pieces. Each picture lists the size, wood and a note to show your carpenter. After the gallery, we explain the joints, the steps of a workshop order and how to use a bed design catalogue well.

Handmade Wooden Bed Design with Joinery on Show

A good workshop bed shows how it is held together. Visible joints are not a flaw here: they prove the frame is built from solid pieces, not just screwed boards.

Catalogue Unique Wooden Bed Design Picks

Most carpenters keep a bed design catalogue of their past work. These three are the kind of unique pieces that end up as favourites in such a book, and you can ask for any of them in your size.

Handmade bed design with a woven rope headboard set in a teak frame
  • SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
  • BuildTeak, cotton rope
  • StorageNone, open legs

Cotton rope is woven by hand across the headboard frame, like an old charpai (string cot). Leaning back on it feels soft, and air passes through in summer.

Tell your carpenterAsk for thick cotton rope pulled tight and tied off inside the frame, so it can be rewoven later.

Unique wooden bed design with a live edge sheesham slab headboard
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildSheesham slab, oil
  • StorageLift-up box

The headboard is one thick slab with its natural wavy edge left on top. No two beds like this are ever the same.

Tell your carpenterA slab must be fully dry. Ask how long it was seasoned and fix it with slotted brackets so it can move.

Handmade wooden bed design with a thin brass inlay border on teak

Joints Used in a Handmade Bed

JointWhere it goesWhy it matters
Mortise and tenonHeadboard posts and railsA peg of wood fits into a slot; very strong in solid wood
Dowel jointPanels, framesRound wooden pins line up and hold parts; neat and hidden
DovetailDrawer cornersInterlocking fingers that do not pull apart
Bed bolts with nut platesSide rails to postsLets the bed come apart for shifting house
Corner bracketsInside the boxExtra stiffness, stops wobble

A handmade bed should not rely on nails alone. Ask which joints are used where.

How a Workshop Builds Your Bed

  1. Measure: the carpenter notes your mattress size and the room, then adds a little to the mattress size for the frame.
  2. Pick the wood: visit the timber yard if you can. Look for seasoned wood with few knots.
  3. Cut and join: parts are cut, joints fitted dry, then glued and clamped.
  4. Treat: the wood is treated against termites before any finish.
  5. Sand and finish: melamine, PU, oil or wax, with a sample approved by you first.
  6. Deliver and fit: the bed is bolted together in your room and checked for wobble.

Using a Bed Design Catalogue with Your Carpenter

A catalogue is a starting point, not a fixed menu. Pick a picture, then change size, wood and storage to fit your home. Keep these points in mind:

  • Write the mattress size on the page you choose: double 48, queen 60 or king 72 inches wide, and 72, 75 or 78 long.
  • Mark which details you want to keep and which to drop.
  • Ask for a quick sketch with heights: mattress top around 20 to 25 inches, headboard 1 to 2 ft above it.
  • Take photos of the half made frame at the workshop to check progress.

For plainer workshop frames, see simple wooden beds, and for heavy detail see carved beds.

Questions people ask

Is a handmade wooden bed design better than a factory bed?

A good handmade bed uses solid wood and real joints, made to your size, so it usually lasts longer. A factory bed is quicker and cheaper but is often made of board with screws and cam fittings.

How long does a carpenter take to make a wooden bed?

A plain bed may take one to two weeks, including finish. Beds with drawers, carving or a head box take longer. Seasoned wood saves time, so ask if it is ready.

What is a bed design catalogue?

It is a book or set of photos of beds a workshop or shop can make. Use it to pick a style, then ask for your own size, wood and storage.

Which joints should a solid wood bed have?

For the frame, mortise and tenon joints or dowels; bed bolts on the side rails so the bed comes apart for moving; and dovetails for drawers if there are any.

Can I give my own design to a carpenter?

Yes. Bring a picture, the mattress size and the room size. A good carpenter will suggest small changes so the design is strong and easy to move.

Why does a handmade bed cost more?

It takes more skilled hours, uses solid wood instead of board, and is made to one order instead of in bulk. Fine joinery and inlay add more.
