A sheesham bed design shows off one of India's best known hardwoods. Sheesham is Indian rosewood, a dense, weighty timber marked with dark streaks, and it takes polish beautifully.
Below are six original designs, from plain double frames to carved statement beds. Each lists the size, finish and storage. After the gallery you will find a sheesham and teak comparison, the seasoning questions that prevent cracks, and the finishes that suit this wood.
If you need a lighter frame, the simple wooden bed page has plain designs in several woods.
Sheesham Double Bed Design: Plain and Box Frames
Sheesham is heavy, so most double beds in this wood keep the shape plain and let the streaky grain show. Here are three that suit everyday bedrooms.

- SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
- BuildSheesham, natural PU
- StorageNone, open legs
A natural finish keeps the contrast between the golden wood and its dark streaks. No carving is needed when the grain is this strong.
Tell your carpenterAsk for the headboard boards matched by grain so the streaks run in one direction.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, honey melamine
- StorageLift-up box
The lift-up box holds winter quilts. Honey polish warms the colour without hiding the streaks, a good choice for a mid-size room.
Tell your carpenterUse 18 mm MR plywood for the top board inside the sheesham frame so it stays flat.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildSheesham, walnut PU
- Storage2 front drawers
Horizontal slats lighten a heavy wood. Two drawers at the foot end are easier to reach than a lift-up box.
Tell your carpenterSheesham drawer fronts weigh a lot, so pick heavy duty runners with full extension.
Sheesham Bed Design Images: Carved and Statement Pieces
Sheesham holds fine detail, so it is a top choice for carving after teak. Keep these for a larger room where the bed can be the main feature. See also our carved bed gallery.

- SizeKing 72 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, dark brown PU
- StorageLift-up box
A carved arch crowns the headboard, with plain panels below. The dark polish makes the carving look deep.
Tell your carpenterAsk to see the carving before polish and check that the cuts are clean with no torn fibres.

- SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
- BuildSheesham, teak shade
- StorageNone, open legs
Turned posts and a thin top frame give height. A white cotton drape over the frame softens the dark wood in summer.
Tell your carpenterUse bolted post joints, not glue alone, so the canopy frame can be taken down for shifting.

- SizeQueen 60 x 75 in
- BuildSheesham, matte walnut
- StorageLift-up box
A jaali (lattice) headboard with a warm light behind it makes a soft pattern on the wall. It is lighter than full carving.
Tell your carpenterKeep a 3 inch gap behind the jaali for the light strip and a small switch at the bedside.
Sheesham at a Glance
Sheesham is Indian rosewood. This dense, weighty wood has dark streaks running through a golden to brown base, and polish brings them out.
| Point | Sheesham | Teak (sagwan) |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Brown with dark streaks | Even golden brown |
| Weight | Very heavy | Medium heavy |
| Termites | Good once treated | Good, natural oils help |
| Movement in monsoon | Low if well seasoned | Very low |
| Carving | Holds fine detail | Carves cleanly |

Seasoning: The One Thing to Ask About
Fresh sheesham holds a lot of moisture. If it is cut and polished too soon, it dries inside the bed and the joints open or the panels crack. Ask your carpenter or shop these questions:
- Was the wood air dried or kiln dried, and for how long?
- Was it treated against termites and borers before polishing?
- Are the headboard panels set in grooves so they can move a little?
- Are the bed's underside and the box interior sealed too?
A seasoned piece feels lighter than a wet piece of the same size and does not feel cool or damp to touch.
Finishes That Bring Out Sheesham Grain
- Natural or clear PU: shows the full contrast of the streaks. Best for plain beds.
- Honey melamine: a warm middle shade, easy to touch up later.
- Walnut or dark brown: hides small marks and makes carving look deeper, but the streaks show less.
- Teak shade: evens out colour differences between boards.
Avoid duco paint on sheesham. It hides the very grain you paid for.
Problems and Fixes for Sheesham Beds
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Hairline crack in a panel | Fill with matching wax and repolish. If it grows, the wood was not seasoned. |
| Too heavy to move | Ask for knock-down bed bolts at each corner from the start. |
| Polish dull after a few years | Light sanding and one fresh coat brings it back. |
| Box lid hard to lift | Add a pair of gas lift pistons matched to the lid weight. |
To add lift-up storage later, read about hydraulic bed fittings.
Questions people ask
Is sheesham good for a bed?
Yes. Sheesham is hard and strong, takes polish well and lasts many years if it was seasoned and treated. It is heavier than most woods, so plan for knock-down fittings.
What is sheesham ka bed design?
It simply means a bed made of sheesham wood. Shops use the term for both plain and carved beds in this wood, often with a box base.
Sheesham or teak: which is better for a double bed?
Teak is a little more stable and resists termites better because of its oils. Sheesham is harder, heavier and has a more striking grain. Both make an excellent double bed if the wood is well dried.
Why does my sheesham bed have cracks?
Small cracks usually mean the wood was not fully seasoned before it was made. Fill and repolish small ones. Keep the bed away from AC vents blowing straight on it and from damp walls.
Can a sheesham bed have hydraulic storage?
It can. Fit a plywood top board inside the sheesham frame to keep the lid lighter, and choose a gas lift rating that matches the lid and mattress weight.
What makes a sheesham bed cost more?
Size, the amount of solid wood, carving, a hydraulic lift and a PU finish all add to the cost. A plain frame with a ply box costs less than an all solid carved bed.
