Bed back quilting design with a diamond stitch pattern in ash grey fabric

A bed quilting design uses lines of stitching to press padded fabric into a pattern: diamonds, vertical channels or square biscuits. The stitching holds the foam in place, so a quilted headboard stays even far longer than a plain padded one, and the pattern hides small creases.

This page shows 6 quilted beds: three headboard patterns and three full quilting bed designs where the base is quilted too. Then you will find a pattern comparison, the numbers to give your upholsterer and how to care for stitched fabric through dusty summers and damp monsoons.

Padded beds without stitching live on the cushion bed page, and the foam inside is covered under bed foam and padding.

Bed Back Quilting Design: Three Headboard Patterns

Most people quilt only the headboard. These three patterns cover nearly every request an upholsterer gets.

Bed back quilting design with a diamond stitch pattern in ash grey fabric
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildAsh grey fabric, ply
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Diamond stitching without buttons gives a flatter, cleaner look than deep tufting. Easy to dust because there are no button pits.

Tell your carpenterAsk for diamonds about 5 to 6 in across, stitched through a layer of wadding over the foam.

Quilted bed design with vertical channel stitching in mustard velvet
  • SizeDouble 48 x 75 in
  • BuildMustard velvet, ply
  • StorageBox with lift-up top

Vertical channels in mustard velvet make the room look taller and add warm colour. Each channel puffs slightly, catching light along the seams.

Tell your carpenterKeep channel width to 4 or 5 in for a double bed so the rows look balanced.

Bed quilting design simple style with square biscuit stitching in cream
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildCream fabric, ply
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Biscuit quilting divides the headboard into soft squares, like a tray of biscuits. Simple and calm, it suits almost any room.

Tell your carpenterMark the square grid in chalk on the fabric first so the lines stay straight and even.

Full Quilting Bed Design: Stitched from Headboard to Base

A full quilting bed design repeats the pattern on the side rails and footboard. It feels plush and looks like one tailored piece.

Full quilting bed design in navy fabric with diamond stitching on every side
  • SizeKing 72 x 78 in
  • BuildNavy fabric, ply frame
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Diamond quilting carries from the headboard down to the side rails and footboard. Navy hides marks and suits a darker master room.

Tell your carpenterAsk the upholsterer to line up the diamonds at the corners so the pattern flows round the bed.

Double bed quilting design in sage green with channels on head and foot
  • SizeDouble 48 x 78 in
  • BuildSage fabric, ply
  • StorageBox with lift-up top

Horizontal channels on the headboard and footboard in sage fabric give a fresh, modern feel. A good double bed for a 10 x 12 ft room.

Tell your carpenterUse a durable upholstery fabric rated for heavy rubbing on the footboard, which gets the most wear.

Modern new bed quilting design with curved wave stitching in taupe velvet
  • SizeQueen 60 x 78 in
  • BuildTaupe velvet, ply
  • StorageHydraulic lift

Wavy stitch lines are a newer look that moves away from straight grids. Taupe velvet keeps it quiet and grown up.

Tell your carpenterWave patterns need a printed paper template; ask to see it pinned on the fabric before stitching.

Bed Design Quilting: What to Tell the Upholsterer

  • Stitch spacing: 4 to 6 in for channels and diamonds. Smaller patterns look busy on a king bed.
  • Layers: ply base, foam, then a layer of polyester wadding, then the fabric. Wadding gives the soft puff between stitch lines.
  • Foam: ask for the density number. Higher density keeps the quilted puff from flattening where you lean.
  • Thread: strong polyester thread in a matching or slightly darker shade.
  • Fabric: velvet shows the quilting best because light changes along each seam. Linen-look fabric gives a softer, matte effect.

For a pad style headboard that is easier to re-cover, see our bed gaddi page. For a wall-wide padded look, see bed wall panels.

Caring for a Quilted Bed

Vacuum along the stitch lines once a week with a soft brush nozzle, since dust settles in the seams first. Blot spills at once; rubbing pushes the stain into the wadding. During the rains, open windows on dry days and run a fan so the foam never stays damp. A musty smell is the first warning sign. If you have a vacuum with a fabric tool, use the lowest suction so the thread is not pulled. Every few months, check the stitching at the corners and footboard, where it takes the most strain, and get loose threads fixed before a seam opens.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between quilted and tufted?

Quilting uses stitched lines to make a pattern. Tufting pulls the fabric deep with buttons. Quilting is flatter and easier to clean; tufting looks deeper and richer.

For a compact bedroom, which quilting pattern works?

Vertical channels or simple biscuit squares in a light fabric. Channels make the ceiling look taller and keep the headboard visually light.

Does quilted fabric last longer than plain padding?

Usually yes. The stitch lines hold the foam and wadding in place, so it does not shift or sag. Choose a good density foam underneath for the best result.

Does a full quilting bed design take more cleaning?

Yes, simply because more fabric is exposed, so vacuum it more often. Choose a darker or textured fabric, and keep pets and shoes off the footboard.

Is bed quilt design the same as bed quilting design?

A quilt is the stitched blanket on top of the bed. Bed quilting design usually means the stitched pattern on the headboard or frame. Many searches mix the two up.

Can I get my old headboard quilted?

Yes, if it has a ply or wooden back. The upholsterer adds foam and wadding, then stitches the fabric in your chosen pattern. See more ideas on our headboard design page.
